The Sakalava lives on the north west coast of Madagascar. Within their culture there is a royalty structure. A king, queen,
prince or princess rules an area of 30 – 40 kilometres in witch they live as normal people. The royal is respected as the highest
traditional power and judge within their region.

| There is a strong Islamic influence in this ethnic culture that is hard to understand. The Sakalava does not bow to the rule of the Malagasy
from the high plateaus that have been ruling since the end of the 19th century. |
The northwest coast of Madagascar has been totally isolated for the last three thousand years. Unbelievably preserved and untouched, due to
the lack of “normal” transportation and communication roads.
Physically the Sakalava’s origin is African, but culturally the strongest influence is Maly-indonesian. hey are essentially fisherman that farm
for subsistence. |
